In Mexico and other Latin American countries, the Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration is a time to acknowledge, recognize, and honor the importance of familial or community loved ones represented in an elaborate and artist ofrenda or altar (display) that includes their picture, flowers, sugar skulls, papel picado, decorations, and favorite foods.
In partnership, the Davis Chamber of commerce, the Davis Phoenix Coalition, Ethnic Studies YOLO Academy, and UCD Mexican Graduate Student Association are looking for local organizations and community members to participate by applying to create ofrendas or altars for the second annual Día de Muertos Celebration at Central Park in Davis to be held Friday, November 1 from 5:30-7:30 PM.
Community members or business that are interested in participating with an altar should fill out the form below.
Ofrendas/altars may include:
Clear vision of who or what is being honored.
Colorful, creative designs that align with the overall values and characteristics of the Dia de Muertos celebration traditions.
Use different levels to represent the underworld, Earth and heaven.
Ofredas/altars can be raised on a small table, or built on the ground.
Photos of family members or loved ones can be displayed.
Hang paper flags (papel picado) to symbolize the wind and arrival of your loved ones.
Food and water can be used, however unless you plan to monitor your display, please do not leave alcohol offerings unattended.
NO open flames, battery operated candles only.
NO business or program promotions will be accepted. Your design must follow the tradition of Dia de Muertos.
Ofrendas/altars will be confined to a 4x3' space.
Ofrendas/altars will be on display until 8:30 pm and must be cleaned up by participant at conclusion of event.
